Winton Loan, Edinburgh

Originally a bungalow, the orientation of this house was peculiar as the ‘front’ door faced away from the street and the main access had become a set of patio doors entering directly into the kitchen. The house was extended to provide a garden room and the attic converted to add a first floor element, with the access issue resolved to give the house an impressive hall and front door correctly orientated towards the street. The proposal aimed to add more ‘public’ areas with a family room being created on the new first floor. A bridge link to the replacement first floor bedroom and an oak staircase gives spatial drama and fine detailing to what is now a key element of the house.
